In September, we launched our Big Charity Competition open to all UK registered charities to demonstrate what our amazing company partners and our company solution can provide to the sector and the individuals charities within. The prize for this three stage competition is £17,000 worth of top level brand strategy and communication assistance provided by Alpha Century (read more here).

We received 254 applications from charities of all size and type. The most important criteria for selecting the charities to the next competition stage was the impact the prize was expected to make for the competition entrant. The most common theme emerging from the answers to this question was the challenge of gaining attention and audience in this busy, message-saturated world.

“We know our model works well, delivering a SROI of £4.66 for every £1 we spend. However, we now need to build our profile to make this sustainable.” – charity entrant quote

“As a small charity we have to stand out and get noticed and this is very difficult when the major national charities dominate the scene as they have professional marketing teams.” – charity entrant quote

Our company partner, the award winning brand strategy agency is keen to help (read more what CEO Hugo Feiler has to say). Alpha Century´s founding team has now shortlisted 33 charities for the second stage of the competition and the list can be found at the end of this blog.

“Whilst we have a long history (we are 150 next year) and a large reach (we support 45,000 families a year), we are by no means a household name.“ – charity entrant quote

“We are in a muddle with our marketing communications. We have lots of people working hard in different areas, but it is not joined up and feels tactical rather than the strategic.” – charity entrant quote

Over the next week or so, the agency employees choose 4-8 charities from the shortlist for the final stage by looking at the whatCharity profiles of all shortlisted charities. The finalists are then listed using our company solution (see the mock version here) and the ultimate winner is selected by a popular vote by Alpha Century´s staff, stakeholders and partners.

“While our aims and principles are consistent nationwide, the practicalities and focus varies from location to location. This makes having a consistent message and brand a challenge to manage.” – charity entrant quote

“As we grow into a medium-sized charity, we need to ensure we are presenting a professional image to potential supporters, and we know winning this competition could really help us with this.” – charity entrant quote

The finalists will be announced on 15th Oct when voting commences. So stay tuned and if you are on the list below, make sure that your whatCharity profile is a compelling one!

Good luck!
